Chapter 52 : Don’t Change Your Dreams While Synchronization Is in Progress (1)
It was the walk to school.
The scenery was as usual: scorching sunlight heating the asphalt, people in lighter clothing.
I was walking through the summer heat.
"Auntie."
At my call, my aunt turned her head. Beads of sweat glistened between her furrowed brows.
Her flushed face and slightly parted lips let out a faint heat. I, on the other hand, swallowed a sigh that threatened to escape.
"Auntie."
"…What?"
I called again, and she finally responded, though her tone was laced with irritation.
The heat seemed to be getting to her.
I touched my lips thoughtfully.
"Wouldn’t it be better to take off the coat?"
"Not until I drop you off at school. I always keep it on here. I’d rather carry it on my hip, but… that’s not allowed in Korea."
My aunt looked at me, tapping her chest lightly. Then, turning her head forward again, she squinted slightly.
I followed her gaze with a blank stare.
The streets were crowded with people: a salaryman sitting at the bus stop, students in different school uniforms hurrying somewhere.
Among them, a group seemed to glance our way, whispering to each other.
‘Same as always.’
It wasn’t as bad as when I was with Pecha and Yuri, but people still found my pale, foreign-looking skin intriguing.
In a quiet residential area, it might’ve been fine, but this was a busy place with plenty of foot traffic.
Which meant these people had likely seen plenty of foreigners before. Yet they still stared like this. There’s no safe zone in Korea, is there?
Anyway, it was time to bring up the point I’d made to my aunt before.
"Auntie, do you see that?"
"Definitely. You do draw a lot of attention."
"Then please reconsider what I said. Having someone tailing me everywhere I go doesn’t feel right.
I already stand out as a foreigner, and with you, Pecha, and Yuri all foreigners too it’s like I get twice the stares."
I pointed toward the crowded street ahead.
"Hmm. I doubt it’s just because of that."
My aunt narrowed her eyes and glanced at my face. I knew it she was about to brush it off, saying it’s all because of my looks, like she did last time.
But this was my chance. With Pecha and Yuri off looking at houses, I rarely got to talk to my aunt alone like this.
"I’m sorry to say this, but… I think I’ve compromised a lot already. My home, my privacy. I know you mean well, but it’s too sudden for me.
Even if I’ve lost my memories, one thing hasn’t changed: I hate being restricted. I’d rather die than be caged."
My voice came out firm, driven by the thought that this was my only chance.
I mixed in some exaggeration and a touch of falsehood for emphasis.
My aunt fell silent at my cold response.
I ran my fingers through my unnecessarily soft hair, waiting for her reply.
But even after a long wait, the answer I wanted didn’t come. All I heard was the city’s cacophony screaming around us.
Car horns blared on the morning commute. A noisy song from a phone store we passed grated on my ears.
The irritating sounds blended into a cheap orchestra, turning this place into a tacky concert hall.
"…"
We walked in silence.
Even as we bumped shoulders with the crowd or faced the flashing gazes of onlookers, we reached the school entrance without a word.
I turned to look at my aunt. Her long black coat reached her calves, its loose fit making her appear even larger.
She couldn’t take it off because of the gun hidden inside. Even in this sweltering weather.
My eyes instinctively drooped, as if weighed down by something.
"…Just go home safely. And take off that coat. It’s hot."
"Tch, I’ll manage just fine."
My emotionless words added ice to the cold silence, but my aunt seemed to find something in them and burst into a hearty laugh.
Her shoulders shook with each guffaw, her dry blonde hair fluttering with the movement.
That flutter brought a warm breeze to the chilly atmosphere, enough to make even me crack a smile.
"…I’ll think about it."
"Think about what?"
"What you said. I know I’ve been pushing too hard. Sorry."
Her expression turned bittersweet as she spoke. I quietly reached out, taking her hand.
"Sorry for being a brat."
___
*Creak.*
I opened the classroom door, my eyes fixed on the seat next to mine without glancing at anything else. It was empty.
Feeling my gaze grow cold, I walked to my seat.
As I sat down, two girls approached hesitantly Hyemin and Suyoung, with their dyed hair and tattoos peeking out from their low necklines.
"H-Hi…"
I quietly raised my hand to acknowledge them. When I gestured for them to leave, Hyemin hurriedly spoke.
"Sehwa… who was that person this morning? The woman in the coat."
I thought for a moment, then lowered my eyes and answered.
"My aunt."
"Oh, I see. I was just curious because she didn’t seem bothered by the heat…"
True, wearing a coat in this weather was unusual.
But…
"She’s not immune to the heat."
"…?"
Hyemin’s wide-eyed question was met with my cold stare.
She shut her mouth, and I waved my hand again to shoo them away.
But Hyemin’s lips twitched as if she had more to say. In the end, Suyoung pulled her away before she could continue.
I finally shifted my gaze from Suyoung. With the distractions gone, I buried my head in my desk.
I planned to stay like this until Mina arrived.
But the fatigue accumulated over days pricked at my eyes, urging me to close them. I couldn’t resist.
(Damn it… not that pattern again. That shitty dream…)
My eyes slid shut on their own.
__
_
Today’s dream was terrifying.
"You were awesome today, son. They didn’t stand a chance."
"Don’t come near me, I told you… Wait, Mom was there too?"
"Of course. It was her idea to go. Say something, honey. You were cheering so loudly earlier."
"When did I do that? Ugh, I was too scared to even watch properly."
Laughter filled the air. It was a warm, happy family my original home.
A chair my chubby dad broke and fixed. A stained sofa. A family photo framed above it.
The warmth of the house spread through my body. It felt cozy, like a fetus curled up, floating in a mother’s womb.
I wished this place wouldn’t break.
But it would. This was cruelly just a dream, not reality.
I remembered the present.
I looked at my parents one last time, unsure when I’d see them again.
I burned their faces into my memory, like a stamp on my retinas.
They tilted their heads at my blank stare, then smiled warmly.
"Hey, why are you crying all of a sudden?"
"He’s always been sensitive. Probably happy because he won the finals. Good job, our son."
Strangely, I wanted to wake up and escape this dream.
__
__
…How long had I been asleep?
Mina was staring down at the person next to her.
She’d overslept and got caught by a teacher at the school gate.
Not a great experience. She sighed irritably, thinking it wasn’t a good day.
"…Maybe it’s not such a bad day after all."
Mina muttered softly. Without realizing it, she reached out and gently touched his black hair.
Carefully, so as not to wake Sehwa.
Only an animal would wake up from someone touching a few strands of hair, not a person.
Anyway.
After a moment, Mina pouted.
"You’re always touching my hair…"
Why was she sneaking around like a guilty thief? That wasn’t all. Lately, Sehwa had been acting strange.
They weren’t dating, but he’d been more touchy, like a lover hugging her from behind or holding her hand, even on the way home.
Since that moment, just thinking about it made her face flush.
Mina quickly glanced around. The teacher was lecturing, and the students were focused.
No one seemed to notice her, thankfully. She covered her reddened face with her hand.
"…Not this time."
Mina shook her head, her silver hair swaying.
She glared at the back of Sehwa’s head with determination.
He might be sleeping peacefully now, but once the bell rang, he’d wake up and tease her.
She wasn’t sure if it was really teasing, but still.
She couldn’t keep being the naive fool. This time, she’d get him back. She’d make that ambiguous, fox-like guy flustered to feel satisfied.
"…It’s unfair if I’m the only one suffering. Just wait till you wake up."
With that, she picked up her pen, determined to catch up on the lesson she’d missed.
…Something was off.
(Why isn’t he waking up?)
It was already lunchtime, long after everyone else had left.
Mina’s heart tickled with unease as she tried to wake Sehwa, acting calm.
"…Huh?"
Fear struck her. No matter how much she shook him, Sehwa wouldn’t wake up.
"Sehwa?"
"Just let him sleep. He’s sleeping."
An annoying voice came from behind. Turning, Mina saw Hyemin standing with a stiff expression.
Mina’s face hardened too as she replied coldly.
"Why? He needs to eat. Mind your own business."
"Hmph. A piece of advice, since we used to be friends."
"If you’re going to say something weird again, just go eat."
Hyemin smirked and leaned in to whisper in Mina’s ear.
"…You’ll die if you keep this up. If you knew what kind of person he is…"
"I know. He was in the mafia, right?"
"How do you? No, you don’t really know."
"So what? He’s not like that now. Has he killed someone or something?"
Hyemin gave a creepy laugh and waved her hand.
"Fine. Good luck. Oh, and don’t tell Sehwa I said anything."
"Are you an idiot?"
Mina stared at Hyemin like she was the dumbest person alive.
Approaching all mysteriously just to say that? If she wanted to flaunt some secret, she should’ve made a deal beforehand.
"Why would I even trust you to tell me that?"
"Uh… no, I meant it with good intentions…"
Realizing her mistake, Hyemin’s face turned blue.
As she stammered excuses, she pointed behind Mina, her eyes wide.
"I-I’m going! Please keep it a secret!"
"…What’s her deal?"
Confused, Mina turned around and froze.
Sehwa, who had been slumped over, was now sitting up, his face buried in his hands.
Mina’s body stiffened with tension. If Sehwa snapped out of it, he’d probably reach out to tease her playfully.
Blushing, Mina cautiously reached out, shaking his shoulder to wake him from his groggy state. They needed to eat.
"Se… Sehwa, get up."
"…Oh, you’re here. I fell asleep waiting for you."
"Waiting for me…? Are you okay? Move your hands."
Mina sensed something off and tried to pull his hands away.
His voice was wet, completely unlike usual.
Her pupils trembled as she carefully reached out.
*Grab.*
Her delicate wrist was caught by a large, firm hand. Seeing half of Sehwa’s face, Mina’s mouth hung open.
"…I had a bad dream. No, a good dream, but…"
Sehwa, who had been quietly closing his eyes, opened them. It wasn’t the unfamiliar gaze he’d had lately. His golden eyes shimmered, wet with emotion.
Startled, Mina didn’t speak. All she could do was send him a worried look she didn’t know what else to do.
What should she do in moments like this? She’d read plenty online, but nothing came to mind.
As Mina lowered her head in self-mockery, Sehwa spoke calmly, as if nothing was wrong.
"Can you do me a favor?"
"…A favor? As long as it’s not weird, I’m fine—"
Lulled by his calm tone, Mina responded as usual.
Before she could finish, Sehwa slowly leaned closer. Mina held her breath, freezing.
"…Why? What are you doing this time… huh?"
His black hair brushed against her cheek, tickling. His unsteady breath touched her shoulder.
…The white chest of her school uniform slowly turned gray, dampened.
Mina quietly reached out, wrapping her arms around his broad back.
