Chapter 51 : The Problem with Cigarettes (2)

"Shall we head inside soon?"

At my words, Pecha and Yuri slowly withdrew their hands from their pockets. I noticed the slight bulges protruding from their suit jackets.

Even though my house was just around the corner, we were lingering on the stairs because of what Pecha had said.

"Someone is tailing us. Please go inside first, and I’ll check it out."

"…?"

I glanced at Pecha after her whisper. Seeing the look in her eyes, I stopped her. Whatever method she had in mind to "check it out" was probably far from peaceful.

And if it wasn’t some stalker but just an innocent passerby whose path happened to cross ours, things could get messy.

In the end, even after entering the building where my studio apartment was, they didn’t let their guard down.

That was their final compromise, their last safety measure to ensure my protection.

In the end, the suspicious tail never showed up.

"I’m sorry for worrying you unnecessarily," Pecha said.

"…That’s strange," Yuri muttered, looking at Pecha with a gaze that seemed to say, *You’re not usually like this.*

Pecha bowed deeply to me, while Yuri stared at her in contrast.

"No need to apologize. It happens sometimes," I said, patting Pecha’s shoulder encouragingly, relieved that no trouble had arisen.

My eyelids felt heavy, and I desperately needed sleep.

"…Thank you," Pecha replied, sounding a bit flustered, her eyebrows twitching.

I gave a small chuckle and led them into the house.

*Time to sleep…*

*Clunk!*

"…?"

When I entered, my aunt was slurping down a cup of instant noodles.

Sweat beaded on her forehead as she kept her eyes fixed on the noodles and spoke.

"You’re back, kid. You guys worked hard."

"Does it taste okay?" I asked, my voice tinged with awkwardness.

She wiped her mouth and replied, "Yeah, it’s good. Sorry if that was yours. Should I buy a few more boxes?"

"It’s fine, take your time eating. Don’t burn your mouth."

As if I’d make a fuss over food.

When I even showed concern, my aunt stopped her clumsy chopstick movements and stared at me intently.

Avoiding her uncomfortably intense, almost teary gaze, I walked toward my bed.

The moment my butt hit the bed, my phone rang from my pocket.

Seeing the name on the screen, I smiled.

"…Sasha, who’s that?" my aunt asked.

"Just a sec."

My mood lifted inexplicably, and the corners of my mouth turned up without me realizing it.

I answered the call with a sense of anticipation.

"Hello, noona. What’s up?"

[…Sehwa, are you free tonight? ]

Her voice sounded so weak, like someone who hadn’t just woken up. The smile faded from my face.

"Is something wrong?"

[No, it’s not that… I just have something I want to talk about.]

From her voice alone, it seemed pretty serious.

"I’m a bit tied up tonight… How about tomorrow night?"

[…]

I wanted to meet Hayul too, but tonight wasn’t possible.

I had to be at work by 8 PM, and factoring in travel and prep time, it was too tight.

When Hayul fell silent, I spoke up first.

"So, noona…"

[Alright. Tomorrow then… definitely.]

Her firm emphasis on the last word was cute, and it softened my expression.

"Okay, see you tomorrow."

Even after hanging up, I was lost in thought, a faint smile in my eyes.

Why did she sound so insistent? Was it for advice? Did she seem down because she needed someone to lean on?

"…Sasha, you look happy. Someone close?" my aunt asked, her eyes uneasy.

"A close noo—"

I started to say "noona" but stopped.

Now that I thought about it, Hayul was 21, and I was 22. That felt a bit unfair.

I brushed my hair back. It wasn’t a big deal right now, so I decided to keep it vague.

"A close friend. She’s helped me a lot and treated me well."

"Are you dating?"

"…No?"

"You don’t love her, right?"

I gave a small laugh and shook my head at my aunt’s cold question.

I was close to Hayul, but not that close, and the sudden question was amusing.

(Is this how a dad feels looking at his daughter?) I tried imagining it but stopped when it started to feel gross.

After I shook my head in denial, my aunt didn’t say anything more.

Feeling the conversation was a bit flat, I searched for tattoo artists on my phone, then gave in to the overwhelming drowsiness and let my body relax.

Watching her sleeping nephew, Roza pressed her eyelids tightly, letting out a suppressed breath.

Even though her nephew had lost his memories, traces of his old self occasionally slipped through.

Every time she saw the glint of Sasha’s golden eyes, filled with all sorts of things, she felt fear fear of what those eyes might bring.

All she could hope was that her nephew would keep his current gaze forever.

"Don’t worry, we’ll take good care of him," Pecha said.

"…Me too," Yuri added.

Seeing Roza’s unease, her subordinates offered words of comfort.

Roza looked at them, then slowly stood up.

With silent steps, she approached her nephew and looked down at his face.

Gently touching his face with her fingers, she spoke.

"Your lover’s future will be one of two things: either you destroy them, or they’re erased from this world as if they never existed."

She wished he could hear her words. At the same time, she hoped he wouldn’t.

"You’ve got love all wrong, nephew. What you learned from your noona…"

Roza gritted her teeth and continued.

"…It’s all fake."

It was my third day at work.

Though it was a short time, I was already being recognized as part of the team.

Chasing off the occasional jerks and not holding back despite being a guy might’ve made it inevitable.

Working a part-time job was a unique experience. Sure, dealing with awful people sucked, but it was fun overall.

Right now, I was heading to the smoking area for a cigarette. Usually, I went with Yuri Yeri, but today it was with Juhana, who started yesterday.

Yeri was out sick today.

I casually lit a cigarette.

"No one to drag out for drinks with senior Yeri today, huh?" Juhana said.

"Yeah, hope she gets better soon," I replied.

Juhana smiled playfully as she spoke.

"Were you close with senior Yeri?"

"Not exactly… just worried as a coworker."

Juhana let out an "Ahh" in acknowledgment.

"Wasn’t it annoying, though? She kept asking you to go drinking after work. Honestly, you know why she did that, right?"

I nodded.

"I know. But I don’t hold any grudges, so it’s fine."

"Wow… you’re pretty big-hearted. Honestly, at first, I thought you were scary. Not you specifically, but like, maybe you had a scary girlfriend with all those tattoos."

Juhana chuckled. I gave a slight smile, touching the corner of my eye.

"I guess I do give off that vibe."

"Just kidding. But what does ‘Adonis’ mean?"

She pointed at the corner of my eye. I hesitated before answering.

I’d looked it up before and found it referred to some pretty boy from Greek or Roman mythology, but saying that out loud felt awkward.

What was interesting, though, was that in this world, I thought the gods’ genders role would be reversed too, but they weren’t.

Except it wasn’t entirely unchanged—judging by how thrilled the women Zeus assaulted seemed to be, it felt almost like erotic fiction. Most people just shrugged it off as mythology, though.

Snapping out of my thoughts, I looked at Juhana, who seemed curious.

"Dunno. Just some random word I got tattooed, I guess."

"…Oh, okay."

Juhana dropped the subject, and I didn’t bring it up again either.

We naturally started smoking faster.

"Senior, wanna have one more cigarette before you go?"

As quitting time rolled around, Juhana asked cheerfully.

I paused my response and looked up at the sky. Fluffy, cotton-candy clouds spread across it. Caught up in the sight, I started to nod but stopped, pulling out my phone and putting it to my ear.

(It’s Pecha. Can I come now?)

"Yeah, come to the place I mentioned."

After hanging up, I saw Juhana’s eyes sparkling.

"Wow, senpai, was that Russian? Talking to a friend?"

"Yeah."

"You speak Korean and Russian so well. That’s unfair. I can’t do either."

I gave a small smile at her self-deprecating joke.

"Whatever. Anyway, sorry, but I’ve got someone waiting, so I’ll head out first."

"Aw, too bad. See you later then!"

I glanced at Juhana as she walked away, then turned around.

Was it just me, or did she seem more lively than Yeri?

In the morning, Hayul woke up with hollow eyes, lying in bed. She fumbled for her phone but felt something soft and furry instead Maru, her pet.

"Maru…"

Turning over, Hayul hugged Maru and closed her eyes. Seeing Maru made her think of Sehwa, and she let out a sigh.

"He’s probably at school by now…"

Muttering weakly, Hayul let go of Maru and rubbed her face. Was meeting Sehwa today the right choice?

If she asked who those women were, would he look at her with guarded eyes, wondering how she knew?

What tormented her more was the sordid images that wouldn’t leave her mind.

Hayul checked her bank account on her phone. She saw several transfers with Sehwa’s name attached.

At first, Sehwa had called her because he couldn’t even afford hospital bills, but now he was sending her hundreds of thousands of won.

Did his parents send him money? But if so, why was he living alone? Most families emigrate together.

Since they’d never talked about his personal life, it was frustrating.

The money she’d lent him, and the costs for raising Maru, which he’d stubbornly sent despite her refusals—how was he earning so much in such a short time?

Her rational mind started to creep in, but Hayul squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head.

"Don’t jump to conclusions, Shin Hayul."

Muttering to herself, she collapsed back onto the bed.

She tried to shake off her thoughts by rubbing her face against Maru’s round forehead, but she couldn’t stop the images of tangled flesh flashing before her eyes.

"…Life feels like a sewer."

Muttering, Hayul covered her eyes with her arm.
