Chapter 40 : The Street Where Words Died (1)

A corridor wide enough for a small car to pass through.

Normally, it would have been filled with the chatter of students, but now, with everyone gone home, it was empty.

I walked alone through the corridor, lingering in front of the stairs leading to the first floor.

What was the source of that feeling?

When I heard the news that the prosecutor had died, I had to desperately suppress the expression that threatened to bloom on my face.

It was because a satisfied smile, like one you'd have after swatting a buzzing fly, nearly formed.

As a result of that effort, the bandages wrapped around my hands were stained red.

Only by doing this could I manage to force a grimace.

It was a strange and unsettling thing. The emotions I felt. And this situation, too.

Ordinary people might casually say they want to kill someone they’re angry at, but if that person actually died at the exact moment they wanted, could they stay calm?

Some people probably could. After all, the grudges we carry differ from person to person.

But I wasn’t quite at that level.

That’s why I put on a regretful expression and offered half-hearted words of condolence.

I didn’t want to be consumed by the satisfaction rising within me or the sense that it was only natural.

“…Maybe I’ll head home and catch some sleep.”

*Thud, thud*

I wandered aimlessly through the corridor before finally stepping toward the stairs.

Carefully treading on the polished steps, which seemed slippery enough to cause a fall, I sank into my thoughts.

I remembered how the people gathered in the principal’s office were trembling as they looked at me. It was quite a bewildering moment, and I could recall every detail.

“By the way, if I’d laughed back there, I would’ve really been misunderstood. They were already scared shitless.”

I tried my best not to let it show, but anyone who wasn’t blind could tell.

Their faces glistened with cold sweat, and their eyes, unfocused, stared at the floor.

Who wouldn’t know where that fear came from?

Well, it’s understandable why they’d misunderstand.

Given what I’d done before the news of the prosecutor’s death broke, it probably looked like I was the one who orchestrated it.

A guy showing up alone, acting like he owned the place, spouting off whatever he wanted, as if he’d never see them again.

The tattoos I’d revealed to provoke the prosecutor and the cocky attitude I’d put on must have added to their misconceptions.

Like I was someone who could order a hit behind the scenes… a gangster, maybe?

A hollow laugh slipped through my lips at the absurdity of it.

“How do these people come up with this stuff? Watched too many movies, huh?”

Especially the woman who seemed to be Hyemin’s mother, bowing her head so low it was quite a sight.

Maybe it was because I’d mentioned having something prepared for Hyemin… it felt like she was trying to save her daughter.

But that wasn’t what I meant. I was talking about the audio file sleeping in my phone. Still, their misunderstanding made things easier.

I thought about deleting the file since the matter was settled, but no, that wasn’t right.

“This needs to stay like a leash. You never know what might happen if the misunderstanding clears up.”

Having narrowly escaped disaster once, I’d become a bit more cautious.

But no matter how dumb I am, how did I not think about the consequences before causing such a mess? Even I’m puzzled by it.

*Clack*

A sound rang out as I stepped off the angular staircase onto the flat floor.

First floor.

I left the building, crossed the schoolyard, and headed toward the main gate.

As expected, it was well past dismissal time, so there wasn’t a single student or person in sight.

The sky was tinged with the faint glow of the setting sun as dusk began to settle.

As the pillars of the main gate, which had seemed small from a distance, grew larger, the sound of my footsteps crunching on the sand became livelier

I passed through the gate and left the school.

“All done?”

Startled by a voice calling me from behind, I turned around.

A short skirt showing off smooth thighs.

A girl who, despite her tight, tailored uniform, was oddly studious.

“…Mina? You didn’t go home?”

“I was waiting for you.”

Mina, who must have been tired of standing and was crouching, struggled to get up with a small groan.

Her skirt rode up, almost revealing her underwear.

I turned my gaze away, afraid I’d stupidly stare at the provocative sight.

“…So defenseless. Can’t you be a bit more careful?”

I was already in a precarious state lately.

It felt like Mina and Hayul were taking turns trying to drive me crazy.

“Ugh…”

Seeing Mina struggle to stand because of her skirt, I walked over and extended my hand.

“Grab it. Why’d you wait anyway? You should’ve gone home.”

“It’s your fault for not replying and making me worry.”

Despite my curt tone, Mina responded playfully, unfazed.

She grabbed my hand, letting out a cute grunt as she stood up.

*ha*

“Thanks.”

I quietly watched as Mina brushed the dirt off her backside, then pulled out my phone.

There were a ton of unread messages from her.

Mina: Where are you? Did the disciplinary meeting or whatever finish? I’m done with school.

Mina: Why aren’t you replying? ㅜㅜ I’ll wait at the main gate. Let’s go together.

Mina: …Did something go wrong? Are you upset?

Reading through the other messages, my gaze, heavy with guilt, turned to Mina.

She was tapping her legs, probably numb from crouching for so long without a chair.

Her silver hair, shimmering in the evening glow, swayed beautifully with each movement.

A girl who could probably charm a truckload of guys had waited here for hours… just for me.

That fact made me oddly happy, but also guilty.

Suppressing the smile threatening to form, I spoke coldly on purpose.

“…What if I hadn’t come out at all?”

“No way. I knew you’d come out eventually.”

I covered my eyes with my hand, pretending to be exasperated, as Mina said she’d have waited for hours.

Through my fingers, I saw her tilt her head curiously.

Her blue eyes scanned me. Wondering why, I lowered my hand and looked at her.

“Something on my face?”

“Huh? Oh, no. You didn’t cover your tattoos today?”

“There’s a reason for that.”

“Oh… really? Did the teachers or those people say anything?”

(say anything? They were too scared to even speak.)

I shook my head to dismiss the thought.

Mina’s anxious expression softened, and she scratched her cheek, as if remembering something.

“Have you eaten?”

“You?”

“Oh… sorry. I got hungry while waiting, so I went to the convenience store.”

“Then we’re good.”

I wasn’t hungry, and since she’d already eaten, there was no need to grab food.

But seeing her suddenly look crestfallen, I realized I’d said the wrong thing and carefully asked,

“Are you hungry?”

“No, no! I just thought maybe you were…”

I narrowed my eyes, unable to figure out why Mina was fidgeting with her fingers.

Then I noticed her crumpled skirt.

She’d waited here for nearly an hour, she said.

*Sigh.*

I let out a mental sigh at her foolish behavior and looked at her still-sulky face.

Why are you making that face? I’m the one who should feel bad.

Sure, she’d stayed here on her own, but after waiting so long, anyone would be upset if the person they waited for didn’t even seem happy to see them. Yet Mina wasn’t angry at all.

Her fidgeting fingers kept tugging at my heart, making me uncomfortable.

(Fine… She waited so long she couldn’t even go home. I’ll at least buy her a coffee.)

It felt like the least I could do. A matter of basic decency.

“Follow me.”

“Huh? Where to?”

“You’ll see.”

__

Mina’s heart sank when Sehwa spoke curtly the moment he saw her.

She remembered something she’d read online about not showing up uninvited at a guy’s house.

What was the reason again?

She couldn’t quite recall, but she’d heard guys didn’t like that kind of thing.

It wasn’t like she’d gone to his house she’d just waited at the school gate but she thought Sehwa was mad at her.

She felt so embarrassed for eating earlier, wanting to hide.

He must’ve been hungry. She could’ve used buying him food as an excuse to hang out!

Seeing Sehwa’s cold gaze, she thought it was all over.

Until just a moment ago.

“Pick quickly.”

“Oh, sorry…”

Sehwa urged Mina to hurry up and choose from the menu. Fair enough she needed to pick so he could eat too.

Mina felt relieved that things had worked out this way.

She decided on her order and stood in front of the barista, who was staring intently at Sehwa.

…She didn’t like that flushed face.

Wanting to get Sehwa away from those eyes, she ordered sharply,

“A vanilla latte and…”

“Java chip, please. With whipped cream.”

“…Yes, those two.”

Mina glanced at Sehwa, who had cut in to order for himself, then looked down to find her wallet.

(At least I’m paying… ugh.)

Sehwa’s confidence felt a bit unfamiliar, but what could she do?

It was normal for the girl to pay… right?

“Um… can I use this card?”

“Yes.”

“Wow…”

When Sehwa handed over his card, the barista looked at Mina with an expression that seemed to say, (Did you save a country in your past life?)

Mina flinched but secretly enjoyed the envious glance.

Meanwhile, Sehwa paid for both their coffees, took the buzzer, and looked at Mina.

“Let’s sit.”

“W-Wait, why? I was going to pay…”

Sehwa playfully tapped her shoulder and smiled.

“Why would you pay? You waited for me. It’s not much of a thank-you, but enjoy it.”

“Uh… okay.”

(Do guys usually do that?)

Flustered, Mina sheepishly put her wallet away and followed Sehwa to a seat.

They sat at a round table by the window with a clear view outside. The table was so small that they were quite close to each other.

Mina liked how clearly she could see Sehwa from here.

*Bzzz*

“I’ll go get it!”

The moment the buzzer went off, Mina hurriedly stood up.

No matter how different Sehwa was from other guys, this was something she had to do.

Sure, people online might call her a simp or whatever, but one look at that face, and those thoughts would vanish.

“Here you go.”

“Quick.”

Mina carefully placed the coffee in front of Sehwa with both hands.

He gave a small smile, as if finding her cute.

Mina felt an overwhelming sense of fulfillment.

Sehwa’s cold face, which rarely seemed    to smile, stole her attention every time it softened into a grin.

Sitting back down, Mina dazedly watched Sehwa sip his drink through a straw, his eyes lowered.

Not satisfied with just that, her gaze slowly drifted down, unconsciously scanning his entire body.

“Why are you staring like that?”

“S-Sorry! It’s just… it’s my first time seeing you this close…”

“The tattoos?”

Mina nodded reflexively.

(Sorry, Sehwa. Really sorry…)

What she’d done was definitely wrong, and she couldn’t make excuses, but Sehwa gave her an out.

“Are they that interesting?”

“Yeah! I mean, really interesting!”

As Mina pretended to be genuinely curious, Sehwa pulled down the collar of his shirt covering his collarbone.

Seeing the revealed tattoos, he let out a thoughtful hum.

Mina couldn’t close her mouth at the surreal sight. What was he doing right now, in front of her?

She wanted to tell him to pull his shirt back up before anyone saw, but her mouth wouldn’t move.

Her reason, telling her to stop him, clashed fiercely with her instinct, screaming that she’d never see something like this again.

Just as reason won and she opened her mouth to speak, her defeated instinct rose again, wielding a devil’s trident.

Sehwa tilted his head innocently and said,

“If they’re that interesting, want to touch them?”
