Chapter 39 : Clothing Combination
For Seong Ahrin, appointments were not particularly nerve-wracking events. Most of her appointments were casual meet-ups with friends.
Usually, when her friends called, Ahrin would laze around at home until it was almost time to meet, then casually get dressed and head out.
Most of these appointments were trivial. Typically, one friend would send a message in the group chat like, "PC room?" and someone would simply reply with a "Sure," and that would be the extent of the planning.
There was nothing particularly exciting about it.
They had been friends since childhood and were as comfortable with each other as could be. They could go to the bathhouse together, see each other naked, and even joke around without any reservations.
You could say they were best friends.
Thus, being a few minutes late for an appointment was no big deal, and there was certainly no need to dress up.
That's why she found the current situation so awkward.
'Ugh...'
It was Saturday afternoon, 12:30 PM.
She was waiting for Lee Se-won in a downtown area. Even though there were still 30 minutes left until their meeting time, she had come out early and was feeling incredibly awkward.
She could hear her heart pounding in her ears. For the first time in her life, she realized that an 'appointment' could be this nerve-wracking.
It was strange. It didn't seem much different from the usual appointments she had. They were friends who had seen each other naked and had even joked around a few times, though unintentionally. Yet, for some reason, she felt several times more nervous than usual.
She knew the reason well. It was because of who she was meeting. This time, it wasn't a familiar female friend but a 'man' she had only met once before.
People naturally get nervous when facing unfamiliar situations.
Her first day at a part-time job was like that.
Her first day at university was like that. First-time experiences were usually nerve-wracking.
In that sense, this meeting with Se-won was like stepping into an unknown world for her. Of course, this was their second meeting, but last time, she had mostly been dragged around, both mentally and physically.
But this time was different. It wasn't a place led by Se-won but a meeting she had initiated herself. They weren't gathering for a simple conversation but to laugh, chat, and have fun together. In other words, it was a date.
Thus, she couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and worry.
She thought back to what had happened two days ago.
'Screeech! You crazy girl!!!'
At that moment, she had sent a pathetic text to Se-won. When the '1' in the just-sent text disappeared, and there was no reply for two minutes, she felt a whirlwind of emotions.
At first, she grabbed her younger sister's shoulders and shook her, thinking about how to kill this crazy girl.
After about 30 seconds, she felt a mix of worry and anticipation about what kind of reply she would get.
For the remaining time, she only felt sadness with the thought, 'This is it.'
The thought that she might have been ignored and that it was over filled her mind.
That's why the reply that came after two minutes was incredibly grateful.
With just one cool reply, '[Sure, then]', she felt like she had gained the whole world. Emotions tend to feel more intense when the contrast is greater.
Just a few seconds ago, she had felt like she was in hell, so the newfound joy felt even greater.
Ah, a person can feel all the emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure in just two minutes.
Thanks to that joy, she was able to plan the entire date course. Now, all she had to do was meet Se-won and have a good time together... though she wasn't sure if everything would go as planned.
'Will I be able to do it well...'
She worried that only awkward silence would fill the air and that she might not look good enough.
She briefly took out her phone to check her appearance again.
A pure white blouse and a contrasting black skirt. And a small crossbag to hold her wallet and phone.
She looked neat and tidy overall.
It was an outfit recommended by her younger sister.
Her sister had said that for such meetings, it was better to look neat rather than flashy.
She wasn't sure if that was true, but she didn't think so.
"......"
She looked around.
The downtown area on the weekend was full of social butterflies. Everyone was dressed stylishly, smiling brightly, and laughing with their partners as they passed by. Unlike the confident women, she continued to shrink back.
She felt a sense of disparity. Yes, this was the innate wall between introverts and extroverts that could not be crossed.
Unlike those who frequented downtown, this place was too unfamiliar for her, who only occasionally visited the local PC room.
Just as she thought she might have come to the wrong place...
Ring!
A small alarm sound accompanied a text message.
[Lee Se-won: Where are you? I've arrived.]
It seemed he had finished preparing and arrived. Seong Arin hastily straightened her clothes and quickly replied to him.
[Seong Ahrin: I'm in front of the XX Jokbal restaurant. You'll probably see me if you come to the front.]
She was so nervous that she naturally used polite language. He had told her to speak casually, but it still didn't come easily. No matter how much they were the same age, it wasn't easy to speak casually in an unfamiliar relationship.
As she waited, blaming herself, she saw a man walking among the crowd.
Even among the many social butterflies, his appearance didn't fade. Unlike the laughing people, a man with a sharp, expressionless face appeared.
A calm atmosphere, contrasting with the lively downtown, flowed around him. The black boxy T-shirt he wore over it seemed to add a chill to that atmosphere.
The space around him seemed to exist separately due to his difficult-to-approach vibe.
As she stood stiffly in the tense atmosphere, Lee Se-won soon spotted her.
Her body was captured in his black eyes.
At the same time, a smile appeared on his face. His sharp eyes formed a thin curve, and a hint of a smile appeared on his previously expressionless face.
Soon after, he opened his lips and said,
"Long time no see, Ahrin."
Strangely, she felt the cold atmosphere around him fade away.
At that sight, she looked at him as if mesmerized for a moment.
But that was only for a moment. Feeling embarrassed for no reason, she turned her head away. Her gaze, which had been directed at him, moved downward.
Her cheeks felt hot.
Still, she managed to speak, but her voice was small and timid.
"Long time no see..."
Her mind went blank.
She had thought of many things to say before meeting him, but now it seemed as if everything had been erased.
Awkwardness dominated her entire body.
'No, you idiot, what are you doing...'
She scolded herself inwardly. She was the one who had called him out, and now she was the one feeling awkward.
She couldn't even make proper eye contact, so how was she supposed to have fun? Seong Arin mustered her courage and lifted her gaze again.
Then, she could see him properly.
He was wearing colors opposite to hers. A black boxy T-shirt that seemed to absorb light and pristine white jeans.
It was a simple combination of solid colors, but it seemed to suit his appearance well.
Especially, the dark-colored T-shirt seemed to complement Se-won's unique vibe well.
He seemed to be looking at her outfit as well, as his gaze moved from bottom to top. After his eyes moved a few times, he spoke.
"You look pretty. The clothes suit you well."
At his words, her face turned red again.
"Th, thank you... You look good too."
Simple compliments were exchanged. The other person didn't seem nervous at all, as he had been smiling brightly since he saw her.
His smiling face certainly suited him, but the thought that only she was nervous made her feel a bit resentful.
For now, she needed to move. Staying like this would only make her more awkward.
She took a deep breath and said to him,
"Since there's still time before the movie, how about we walk around downtown for a while?"
"I don't mind."
That was a relief. She put strength into her stiff legs and started to take one step at a time.
For now, they would walk around. Something would come up. She remembered there was a stuffed toy vending machine nearby. Maybe if they played there, time would pass quickly.
As she was thinking that and starting to walk, she heard a voice from behind.
"Ah, now that I think about it, our outfits are similar."
A white blouse and a black boxy T-shirt.
A black skirt and neat white jeans.
As if they had intended to contrast colors.
Unintentionally, their outfits had similar elements.
Looking at that, Lee Se-won continued with a playful voice,
"Looking at it like this, we seem like we're wearing couple shirts. Don't you think?"
At that moment, Ahrin decided to buy her younger sister, who had recommended the outfit, some fried chicken.
